• Drivers of high vehicles in Dublin Port could be left with no way out of the city once the new port access tunnel opens.

Now, following a meeting on 15 February, Dublin City Council has agreed to hauliers' demands for a comprehensive traffic management study.

A port access tunnel is currently under construction, but some trucks will be too high to fit into it—but neither the hauliers nor tunnel man

agement are able to say how many of 1,200 trucks a day now using the port will not fit.

With clearance of only 4.65m the tunnel will certainly exclude car transporters, which need 5m clearance, and there will also be problems for Supercube curtainsiders and -art Gin containers.

When the tunnel opens, in early 2005, truck movements through the city will be curtailed and trucks will be diverted into the tunnel. But

at a meeting with tunnel project management, hauliers discovered there is no other route out of the city allocated for high units.

"There is going to have to be an alternative route, even if it's only for tunnel maintenance," says the hauliers' spokesperson Ciaran Dowling.

The tunnel will be toll-free for trucks, but private cars will be tolled to discourage motorists from using the new route to the outer motorways.
