• A Scottish haulier who ran four failed transport firms has been banned from holding or obtaining an Operator's Licence in any Traffic Area for two years.

Jim Hay ran John Adams & Sons, Eye Plc, Ditchfield Transport and Finlay Guy Transport, which all went bust owing thousands of pounds. He also lost the licence he held in his own name when he failed to appear before Scottish Deputy Traffic Commissioner Richard McFarlane last week.

The inquiry heard that Hay had connections with failed firm Finlay Guy Transport which was refused a licence in November 2001 on financial grounds.

McFarlane said: "I am always concerned when a company goes into liquidation and another company rises like a phoenix from the ashes and then itself quickly goes into liquidation. It takes my breath away.

"Given the concern I have about Mr Hay's direct or indirect involvement with companies that had financial difficulties, I have no alternative other than to revoke the licence," he added.

But the RHA's Scottish director, Phil Flanders warns: "There is nothing stopping him starting up again as a freight forwarder or shipping agent."
