Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BY THE HAWK

• Frozen Golders Green residents waiting for a bus to Crystal Palace last week probably thought, "typical — you don't get one for ages and then 30 come along at once", as a convoy of Routemasters appeared over the hill.

In fact they were witnessing the 35th anniversary run of Douglas Scott's well-loved passenger vehicle, which first went into service in February 1956 on the Golders Green to Crystal Palace route.

London's Routemasters have somewhat diminished in numbers, but there are still more than 700 in service on Central London routes. Many are now being modernised with new Cummins engines replacing the vulnerable AEC units so it is likely that some will last out the century.

'This year's run attracted red, green, blue, yellow and white Routemasters in many operators' liveries. The oldest dated from 1959, and is still owned and operated by London Transport. It should be along in a minute...

With smoking banned from all London buses from 14 February London Buses is adding its weight to a nationwide campaign to kick the evil weed by sponsoring Quitline for a day — smokers gasping to give up can telephone for helpful advice from Clare Rayner — Agony it ain't.

• The winners of the Tyreservices model truck competition (CM 24-30 January) are David Knowlson of Suttonon-the-Forest, North Yorks; George Jackson, Washington, Tyne & Wear; and F Lambert, Luton, Beds. Each will receive a die-cast 1934 Ford A Stake model truck for recognising the vehicle.

• Fund raiser Comic Relief is launching red noses for trucks in time for its television marathon on 15 March. The Hawk welcomes pictures of suitably hootered trucks and will publish the best ones in this column — black and white photographs are preferred.

A gift voucher will be sent to the best one, entries by 15 March, please.

• Fanta-astiel was the 'Tieton of German drivers encountering a tricky stretch of motorway which had turned into a bright orange skating rink after a truck carrying soft drinks jack-knifed. The acci dent warranted a fizz-it from the police. (That pun takes the pip so we'd better rind it up, me old fruit — Ed).

• The Hawk's feature on aid to Romania (CM 7-13 February) has prompted news of two other trips:

Royal Mail Portsmouth, in association with the charity Mencap, is organising a sixvehicle convoy leaving on 4 March with medical supplies, food and carrying a miscellany of essential items from lightbulbs to washing lines, concrete and paint. The convoy includes trucks from Parcelforce and Royal Mail International. Brittany Ferries has provided a cheap crossing, and the drivers are giving up their holidays.

In Scotland, John Rowe Roadsweeping Services of Glasgow and the Simone Appeal has two container loads of drugs, clothes and toys ready for a trip in August to help Aids babies in Bacau.

But John Rowe needs the loan of a truck and offers of diesel to get under way. Contact (0563) 821894 or (0836) 635580.
