WE'D LIKE to challenge Mr Welch of the Leeds Transport Training Group about his claim to supremacy (CM, January 31).

We have been training people to Class 1 standards since 1969, and in that time we have maintained high standards and enjoyed a high degree of success in the tests. What I should like to know is what is the "national average" that Mr Welch is good at getting above?

If the GTAs can get above our pass rate we should like to hear from them.

We feel that we fill a very important gap in training facilities left by the RTITB for small operators and individuals who can't afford Board prices and are not entitled to training grants.

We also offer individual lessons so enabling the small operator to keep an eye on his business while training — very important, especially these days when no one can afford two weeks away from a business. We also train to Class 1 in one week, so why do RTITB need longer? We get the results we want in half the time it takes the Board.

Some of the Board's other training courses are also open to criticism. We run a small haulage concern alongside the training, of which I am the CPC holder. I could not afford a Board run course, so I went to the public library, collected the relevant books, ordered CM and read like crazy for a week, sat the exam and passed first time.

Is the Board afraid of healthy competition, especially from private enterprise? I know we all think our way is best, but please stop knocking small businesses, after all we are supposed to be a nation of shopkeepers!
