Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

From our Industrial Correspondent

THE employers' side of the National Council for the Omnibus Industry will probably follow the example of their municipal colleagues next Tuesday and offer pay rises of up to 6 per cent to their 100,000 employees.

It was thought that they would have little alternative, following endorsement by the full National Joint Council for Road Passenger Transport last week of its Wages Committee's recommendation of an extra 14s. a week for drivers and 10s. bd, for conductors and maintenance men. This left only one formality— acceptance by a delegate conference of busmen from the Transport and General Workers' and General and Municipal Workers' Unions, which happened on Tuesday.

If anything, the pressure on the private companies has been greater than on the municipal undertakings. Strikes, bans on overtime and working to rule have left the employers in little doubt of the dissatisfaction of their busmen.

But one thing is certain—the offer will not be as high as the 12 per cent granted. to the 5,000 busmen in the Irish Republic. It is the full amount claimed by the four unions concerned and is to be back-dated to January 17.
