highway authorities are fully aware of the importance of immediate snow clearance, which in the majority of cases now appears to be a well-organized operation, reports the Traders' Road Transport Association as the result of a survey which it has conducted throughout England. Scotland and Wales. The purchase of highly specialized equipment, a far greater use of radio control and a closer link with the weather forecasters: these general trends are noted by the T.R.T.A., compared with the results of a similar survey last year.

As well as asking for information, the T.R.T.A, invited comments on the ways in which vehicle operators and drivers could help in times of bad weather. Among the suggestions received from the highway authorities were: all drivers should carry shovels, tow ropes, chains, sacks of grit; they should obey diversion signs—last winter it was found that where these were ignored, vehicles often became stranded and hindered the snow ploughs; indiscriminate overtaking of snow clearance vehicles should be avoided as it often results in the overtaking vehicle becoming stuck and thus hindering the snow plough or gritter; and parked vehicles should be kept off the streets in bad weather as they interfere with early morning snow clearing.

The T.R.T.A, traffic and highways committee will discuss the survey at its next meeting,
