ACOACH operator who admitted that he had been operating an irregular hire service for miners, was last week granted a licence to continue the work. He was Mr. D. S. Macphail, Newarthill, Lanarkshire. His application to the Scottish Traffic Commissioners was opposed by the Central S.M,T, Co., Ltd.

Mr. J. Y. Robertson, for Mr. Macphail, said he owned five private-hire vehicles, and since January, 1957, he had been operating a regular hire service for miners employed on the backshift at Branchal and Kingshill collieries. The 144-mile journey was paid for by a cornmittee of men, whose money he received at the end of each week.

He learnt only a fortnight before making his application that the service was irregular, as he did not hold a road service licence.

The Commissioners granted a licence for a direct service to three Lanarkshire collieries from Carfin via New.arthill.
