Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Drivers are taking the battle against truck crime into their own hands by launching a text alert service in the new year. Sally Nash reports.

BARRIE TOZER. WHO runs website Truckersworld, has won support for his Truck Crime Text Alert scheme from Truck pol, the Joint Action Group on Lorry Theft (JagoIt) and the Home Office.

The scheme, to be launched in the new year. will forward details of truck thefts to drivers by text within 30 minutes of a crime being reported.

-This is a way that. as drivers, we can assist the police in apprehending the criminals involved." says Tozer. "The cost of truck crime in the first quarter of 2006 was in excess of E.26m and it involves us all. It's only as an industry that we can bring it under control.

-Companies could also gain if insurance costs start to fall or at least stop rising."

Tozer is looking for further sponsorship following initial funding from motorway services operator Welcome Break. The text operation will be handled by Fastsms, a leader in bulk text messages.

Every driver who signs up to the free scheme will receive an ID card and a cab window sticker.

For more information see www. truckersworld.co.uk • Welcome Break has promised to build 50 new showers and refurbish the existing facilities following a recent meeting with Tozer and his dri%er team. The MSA operator is also considering enhanced security and new menus for drivers.
