Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A number of hauliers face uncertain futures in the light of the collapse of Glasgow freight forwarding company Carloway International and the apparent disappearance of the man behind the firm, Gary Clarke.

Frank Bowler of Oxfordbased Spire Motor Services Transport says he is owed .00,000 for international work for Calloway.

He adds that all attempts to trace Clarke have failed and the firm's phone number is unobtainable.

Owner-driver husband and wife team Trew Transport claim they are owed £2,500 and again cannot contact Clarke. The only former member of Carloway's staff still contactable is the resigned company secretary, Willie Dick, Dick says he has no knowledge of Clarke's whereabouts and had nothing to do with the day-to-day running of Carloway. He also claims his appointment as company secretary was forged and says he has no knowledge of the company's debts.

"I haven't seen him and I don't know where he is," he says. "I'ni not sure there was any money as it may not have been collected."

Dick was also working for the failed freight forwarding firm European Food Transport when it went into liquidation almost a year ago (CM 26 January-1 February 1995).

June Trew say she is now trying to get the outstanding payment from the company on whose behalf the work was undertaken, Esk Foods. It has agreed to pay the couple with the written permission of Clarke, but so far she has not been able to get hold of him.
