• Police are waiting to question a Cornish truck driver after five people were killed in what is being described as the worstever road traffic accident in the county's history.

The driver in the case was named this week as Mark Wade, 29, from Newquay, who works for Newquay-based Bazely Plant Hire.

The three men and two women were killed in the accident when the arm — of a Caterpillar excavator being carried on a driven by Wade low-loader smashed into four oncoming vehicles near Newquay.

Bazely Plant Hire is not commenting on what might have caused the accident."All we are concerned about is the driver and the families of the dead," says the company.

Cornwall police are currently examining the vehicle in an attempt to ascertain the cause of the accident.
