WILE approving the general princriples of the E.E.C. Commission's. draft transport policy, the permanent conference of E.E.C. chambers of commerce has, in a recent resolution. called for quicker action an some items. The conference thinks that liberation of transit traffic, harmonization of fuel taxes and social equalization should be achieved much more quickly than proposed at present.

It also thinks that forked tariffs shonlcf be applied only to international traffic in the first phase, that they should be • set by tariff committees composed of transport operators in consultation with users (thus accepting the possibility of making private agreements), and the conference is strongly opposed to the fixing of rates being left to the authorities, with the possibility of rates then being • narrowly forked or even fixed.

Road transport quotas should be increased more rapidly than the propor: tionate growth in trade, maintains the _ conference; it also asks that valid definitions for different forins of transport should be laid down before the end of 1963. While approving the E.E.C. Commission's proposals for vehicle weights and dimensions, the chambers of commerce do not think that these go far enough.

The E.E.C. Council is due to discuss the draft transport policy today, Friday.
