GUY MOTORS, LTD., and S. S. GUY, No. 14,254, dated 8th October, 1915.—The special feature of the three-point suspension described in this specification is that any fore and aft movement of the sub-frame with respect to the main frame is prevented. The front suspension point is sitroated at the middle of a cross-member of the main frame, being an upstanding belt rigidly fixed to the sub-frame and having a. ball-and-socket connection with the main frame.

The two rear suspensions consist of bolts having a ball-andsocket connection with the sub frame and link connections with a cross-tube on the main frame.

Supposing one of the front whee;s is lifted above the level of the other wheels, the side frame of the chassis is shortened in plan, and the front and rear transverse members of the frame are therefore no longer parallel. The rigid connection of the front bolt With the sub-frame prevents any longitudinal movement, and the non-psi-nudism of the cross-members of the .main frame is taken up by the differing amount of fore -and aft swinging of the rear suspension links.

D. HUFFMAN, No. 101,840, dated 17th May, 1915.—The accompanying drawings show some features of construction of a motor sleigh adapted to be driven by an air propeller. In this particular instance the sleigh is comprised of the frame, springs and motor of a Ford car. Suitable sleds are mounted at the front and rear ends of the frame, the rear sled being secured by radius rods to a bolster under the front spring of the chassis. The front sled carries a framework with a propeller and friction driving gear, the gear being so arranged as to be coupled on to the engine driving shaft. Steering is effected by turning the front sled relatively to the chassis and a cardan joint is provided in the driving shaft. PACKARD MOTOR CAR CO.,, No. 15,070, dated 23rd February, 1915.—When the gudgeon pin is arranged centrally on the piston, the angularity of the thrust on the compression and exhaust strokes tends to rock the piston on one side and on the suction and power strokes to the other side. This objection is overcome by arranging the gudgeon pin below and to one s.ide of the centre of the piston. The 'pressure on the top of the piston is then unbalanced so that the piston is not free to rock to either side of the cylinder.

Experiment has shown that good results are obtained by displacing the gudgeon pin sideways about 1-32nd of the diameter of the piston and downwards about 1-16th of the length.

CATERPILLAR TRACTORS, LTD,, No. 101,954, dated 26th November, 1915.—The steering of caterpillar vehicles is effected, according to an earlier patent, by a single hand-lever which can disengage the clutch' for the driving gear on either side of the vehicle. According to the present invention an addition is Made to such a control whereby further movement of the steering handle, after the clutch has been disengaged, applies a brake to the gearing on that side of the vehicle. Better control for steering purposes is thereby obtained. The steering handle is coupled to a slotted plate having pins engaging the slots to effect the control of the clutches. The plate also carries pins which can be brought into engagement with the brake rods lying one on either side of the plate.

The two brake rods are coupled to an equalizing bar, and a single lever permits both brakes to be applied simultaneously when desired independently of the steering control.
