• Engineering specialist Tickford has unveiled a panel van research vehicle that can
run on three different fuels. The vehicle—a response to increased interest in alternative fuels—can operate on petrol, compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
The modified longwheelbase Transit can offer bi-fuel petrol/CNG operation, bi-fuel petrol/ LPG operation, or mono-fuel CNG operation.
The project is
The multi-fuel vehicle is a research tool focused on meeting future emissions legislation and optimising on-board fuel storage. Usually, the tanks intrude into the load space, but in this instance they are stored under the floor.
In bi-fuel petrol/CNG operation, there is some compromise when using CNG because it has to run on petrol engine management settings. In mono-fuel CNG operation, the compression ratio can be increased and the timing altered to improve efficiency.
Emissions can be further reduced by using a methanecompatible catalyst.
