NEW rport coaches with seats for 41 passengers and 300 Cu. ft. of luggage space are to be placed in service by Manchester Corporation. Leyland Royal Tiger underfloor-engined chassis form the basis for the metal bodywork built by H. V. Burlingham, Ltd.

Tubular framing is used for the seats, 20 of which. arc fitted at first-floor level and the other 21 on the raised observation deck at the rear.

LOSS INTO PROFIT?

rLEETHORPES Transport Depart'-' ment hope to turn a loss into a profit on the North Sea Lane service where they have just begun to operate their first one-man-operated bus. Based on a Daimler chassis, the new bus has seats for 43 passengers.

On entering the vehicle, passengers place their fares on a tray at the side of which the driver issues tickets and change from a machine. Electrically operated folding doors can be opened either by the passengers or the driver. A mirror gives him a full view of the saloon.

NO FIRST-AID: DISCHARGED

THE Wolverhampton coach operators, Don Everall, Ltd., and one of their drivers were given an absolute discharge by Daventry magistrates last week after being charged with using a vehicle not carrying first-aid equipment.

The driver, F. Crowther, pleaded guilty, but the operators pleaded not guilty on the ground that it was a relief coach, having picked up passengers from another which had broken down.

Crowther told the court: " I was anxious not to waste any time. 1 had some bookmakers with all their tackle going to Newmarket and, after changing everything over, I forgot the first-aid kit."

SKYE TRANSPORT LOSSES

UNLESS some services are operated by owner-drivers with small vehicles or, alternatively, 14-seat buses are introduced, there appears to be no future for passenger transport on the Isle of Skye for eight months of the year, according to the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority.

Skye transport operators are faced not with what profit can be made, but rather with how best losses can be met and curtailed, be said at Portree last week. Announcing that the PortreeArmadale service, which had been operating for many years, was to be withdrawn at the end of August because of heavy losses, he added that offers to run it would be considered.

L.T.E. ROMFORD GARAGE OPENED

THE latest to • be completed under London Transport's post-war programme, Romford garage was brought into service last week. It occupies a 2-acre site and provides accommodation and running maintenance facilities for 115 buses. No provision has been made for performing heavy service work, which is intended to be done at Hornchurch.

NEW WOLF GRINDER MOW in full production, a new grinder, for which is claimed an exceptionally high rate of stock removal, has been introduced by Wolf Electric Tools, Ltd., Hanger Lane, London, W.5. Known as the type GQ6, it is powered by a new design of motor with highspeed/torque characteristics, and the peripheral speed of the grinding wheel is 8,800 ft. per min.
