Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ik SIX-WHEELED tractor, equipped .M with an 11,3-litre direct-injection oil engine, and .built for hauling loads of up to 40 tons gross vehicle weight, has been added to the range of Transport Equipment (Thornycroft), Ltd., Basingstoke, Hants. It can be provided with a fifth-wheel attachment for operation with a semi-trailer, or an unsprung coupling can be fitted to the rear crossmember which is reinforced for hauling a fouror six-wheeled trailer.

Called the Big Ben, the new Thornycroft tractor has a four-speed gearbox, similar to the Antar type, and a twospeed 'auxiliary box directly attached to it. The 11.3-litre oil engine is rated to develop 155 b.h.p. at 1,900 r.p.m. and 508 lb.-ft. torque at 1,000 r.p.m. Clayton Dewandre compressed-air braking equipment is employed and the chassis has a mean wheelbase length of 13 ft. 6 in.

Hauling the Dyson semi-trailer on test, a 28-mile circuit was covered at 21.4 m.p.h. average speed and the consumption rate worked out at 51.m.p.g. The outfit was operating at 39 tons gross weight. Farleigh Hill and other gradients were climbed without making use of the auxiliary gearbox.

LICENCE TO BE REVOKED?

Licensing Authority has appeared to be contrary to Section 7 (1) of the 1933 Act, and an official of the Authority told The Commercial Motor on Wednesday that it may have to be revoked. AMESSAGE from the Minister of Transport asking drivers to play their part in reducing road casualties will accompany all driving licences issued from now until the end of the year. It is part of the Coronation year crusade to reduce accidents by at least 10 per cent.

Drivers are particularly asked never to take the wheel unless they are physically fit and mentally alert.
