I FEEL COMPELLED to respond to the letter printed under the extraordinary heading "Tarmac's Safety Farce" (CM 24 March). It is a source of concern to me that you should make light of our determination that our operations should be safe. It is simple. I don't expect to be hurt in the carrying out of my job, and 1 don't see why anyone else working for Tarmac should be. This conviction is shared by my senior colleagues, and increasingly at all levels in the company and its contractors.

Since 2000 we have improved our safety performance by a factor of five, and 89% of our sites were free of lost-time injury last year.

All our units are operating to a target of zero and will continue to do so.

We believe that good business is safe business.! would be more than happy to discuss with Commercial Motor the strategy we are implementing to make people who work for Tarmac, or are affected by its operations, safe..

Robbie Robertson CEO, Tarmac Group
