Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TRADE in general is improving steadily, if more rapidly in some

trades than in others. The lighter sections are most active, particularly clothing, boots and shoes and the like. The heavy industries, shipping and engineering, are still moving very slowly indeed and, midway between these two extremes is the building trade, which seems likely to offer more scope for hauliers this year than it did last year.

North-East Coast.

The coal trade keeps fairly steady; the demand for domestic supplies is . diminishing. but that for industrial purposes is on the mend.

J. Huntley and Son, Ltd., Marion Street, Sunderland, is to build pithead baths, costing approximately 125,000, at Blackball Colliery, Durham, Shipbuilding and ship-repairing show little change, although one or two fairly important repair contracts have been secured.

Mr. J. Lane, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle, proposes to build 28 houses in Walker Road, Newcastle, whilst 32 dwellings are to be erected in Coleridge Avenue, South Shields, for Mr. M. Swabs, Imeary Street, South Shields. Mr. J. Barrow, Burns Street, Jarrowon-Tyne, has secured a contract for the erection of 24 houses for Washington (Co. Durham) U.D.C. Cussing (Contractors), Ltd., Wellburn, Newcastle, W, E. Hall and Son (Low Fell, Ltd., 32, Mosley Street, Newcastle, and A. Gunning and Co.' Hannington Street, Newcastle, are to build several hundred houses at. Gosforth, Newcastle.

Yorkshire.

Business in cheap lines of cutlery is still good, whilst the production of safety razors and blades is stated by one authority to be "enormous." There is considerable seasonable business in farm implements and garden tools and activity in small-tool factories is rife.

Business in the spinning section of the woollen industry is good, and there is a fair demand for yarns for the dress goads and weaving trade. The latter, too, have loads to offer. From Leeds comes the report that the leather market is steady. There are definite signs Of an improvement in the Sheffield steel industry. Building schemes under consideration by West Riding Education Committee total in value /307,000.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

Hat manufacturers in Denton aud thereabouts are busy. The leather markets of Warrington, Runcorn and Liverpool are active. The Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, has recently obtained some large orders. Ship-repairing yards on the Mersey are busy. Preston T.C. is to erect 99 houses at Ribbleton, and Messrs. P. A. Baines and Son, Paley Road Sawmill, Preston, are to build 41 houses on the Frencliwood Estate for Preston Corporation. Midlands. • Both the hardware and building industries in the Midlands are bright spots. In the Black Country unemployment is decreasing. The boot and shoe manufacturers of Northampton are being asked to expedite deliveries.

Messrs. Geo. Cooper and Sons, Nuneaton, are to build 120 houses at Tuttle Hill; Messrs. G. E. and W. Wincott, Nuneaton, are to construCt 22 houses in Westbury Road, Stoekingford, and Messrs. It. H. Sinimonds, of Hinckley, are to erect about 450 Nimes on Tom Thumb Farm at Weddington, Nuneaton.

Wulsall T.C. has arranged to erect 89 hooks at Proffitt Street. 13. Whitehouse and Sons, Ltd., Edgbaston, Birmingham, is to build a school at Jervoise Road, on the Wevley Castle housing estate, for Birmingham Corporation. Harlow, Stone and Storer, Ltd.. is to erect casual wards for Derby P.A.C.

Honset to the number of 154 are to be built in Rowley Regis; 146 in the Gorsty Hill Estate by Housing, Ltd.. Station, Blackheath, Birmingham, and. eight, by .T. Brooke, of Wednesbury, on the Birmingham Road. Gee, Walker and Slater, Ltd., is to 'erect a school at Sinfin for Derby E.G.

Scotland.

The return to popularity of Cheviot suitings is expected to benefit the Scottish tweed industry..

Edinburgh Public Health Committee has approved plans for the erection of 104 houses and 15 shops at St. Leonards, also 124 houses at Niddrie Mains. Messrs. Geo. Duncan and Son, St. James' Place, Inverurie, are to carry out the principal part of a contract to enlarge the branch hospital, Daviot, Pitcaple, for the directors of the Aberdeen Royal Mental Hospital.

Wales.

The recent improvement in the coal trade in South Wales is maintained. Pontypool U.D.C. is to erect a further 100 houses.

West Country.

The leather trade in Bristol is good ; so also is the demand for timber.

East Anglia.

The improvement in the boot and shoe trade is reacting to the benefit of the factories in Norwich. United Canners, Ltd., proposes to erect a new factory in Norwich Road, 1.Visbech. V. A. Marriott, Ltd., Ipswich, is to erect 10 additional classrooms at Ipswich School. Messrs. Lumley and Bray, Winterton, are to build 50 houses on the Crosby housing estate for Scunthorpe and Frodingham U.D.C.

London and Home Counties.

The hat trade in Luton is so good that the manufacturers are refusing orders. Bermondsey reports a certain amount of liveliness in the leather market. There is an impending increase in the demand for timber for all purposes, but mainly, of course, for building. Plans have been passed for the erection of a box-making factory at Hoddesden.

Maidenhead is to have a swimming pool, ballroom and tea terrace. The concern responsible is the Empire Building and Trading Co. New municipal offices, costing /31,000, have been approved for Wallington. A new Methodist church is to be built at Manor Road, Woolston, Southampton.

East Preston R.D.C., Sussex, is to build 22 houses. Uxbridge U.D.C. is to construct 150 houses on the Avenue hewing estate, Hillingdon.

Several London boroughs have just passed plans for considerable expenditure on housing schemes. Typical examples are :—Bermondsey, which is to spend nearly 145.000 on buildings in Rotherhithe Street (West) and Albion Yard : Brixton, which has asked for sanction to spend 190,000 on a site at Vassal Road: Hackney, 111,350 on the erection of a block of dwellings on land adjoining the Northwold Road area: Deptford, 110,000 for the acquisition and clearance of properties in the Bronze Street and Speedwell Street areas, and Poplar, which has applied for a compulsory clearing order relating to Prospect Place, David Street, and St. Leonard's Road.

Messrs. A. Brown, 141, The Broadway, West Ealing, W.13, are to build 20 houses for Berkhamsted U.D.C.

A. E. Wright, Ltd., Leyton, has secured the contract for a large county high school to be built for Essex E.G.' at Ilford.
