WITHOUT examining any books, a man took over a livestock haulage business and paid 150 for goodwill, the Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. I. H. E. Randolph, was told last week. He refused to transfer • a retired farmer's B licence to Mr. M. D. Thackray, Barnsley, pointing out that licences could not be bought.

Mr. Thackray produced letters and called three farmers in support of his application. Cross-examined by Mr. T. B. Atkinson, for British Railways, he admitted that the licence had not been worked since April. He also agreed that when he paid his £50 he had not seen any haulage receipts.

Four livestock hauliers, who also objected, said they could easily absorb the small amount of traffic involved.
