Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1--IPPOS1NG an application for a new B licence to permit a van to be used for carrying furniture from dealers' sales, Mr. T. B. Atkinson claimed at Leeds, last week, that auctioneers would support anyone who promised to have a vehicle waiting to clear salesrooms quickly.

The application, in respect of a 1.1-ton van, was by Mr. H. M. Mackie, Leeds, who sought "second-hand furniture, ordinary furniture removals, and newspapers within 25 miles of Leeds Post Office." Mr. Mackie said that since the war he had been unable to keep a regular job because of illness," and he had been using the van on C licence. Now he wanted to carry newspapers on Sundays and to take furniture to and from salesrooms, He produced six letters from auctioneers and antique dealers and one from an ex-Servicemen's association. Cross-examined by Mr. Atkinson, for the objectors, B.R.S. (Piekfords), Ltd., he agreed that he had canvassed all the letters. He said he thought ad economic rate would be 12s. an hour', although he had never taken any advice on it.

Refusing the apPlication, the Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. J. H. E. Randolph, said this was an,other case which illustrated that supporting letters, without witnesses, were of no value. He was doing the applicant a service in rejecting it, because otherwise Mr. Mackie would probably find himself involved in a rate war.

CANADIAN COACH WITH ROLLS-ROYCE ENGINE

A CANADIAN concern, the Sas1-1 katchewan Transportation Co., is operating a coach powered by a RollsRoyce 185 b.h.p. four-cylindered supercharged oil engine.

The coach is one of six luxury vehicles, purchased recently from the Western Flyer Coach Co., of Winnipeg, and called the Canuk range. This is said to be the first instance of a RollsRoyce oil engine in a passenger vehicle in western Canada, and the first Canadian bus to have a Rolls-Royce unit as initial equipment.
