One business that has opted to acquire compliant second-hand trucks rather than have filters fitted to its existing vehicles is Gill Aggregates. Based in Gravesend, Kent and with depots in Northfleet in the same county, Dagenham, Kingsmead in West London and Cardiff, it supplies bagged aggregates to builders’ merchants.

“We’ve gone for seven 57-plate 420hp Scania tractor units, all 6x2s and plated at 44 tonnes,” says Hemin Patel on behalf of the company. “We felt that made better sense given how much filters cost and we like the Scanias because they don’t need AdBlue.

“That helps when it comes to maintenance.” The Scanias were sourced from Driffield, East Yorkshire used vehicle specialist D G Taylor. “They’re good friends of ours,” he says.

Gill Aggregates is part of the multi-faceted £40m-or-thereabouts annual turnover Gill Group. Based in Handsworth, Birmingham it includes a civil engineering business, a plant hire company, a chain of builders merchants and has executive jets available for businesses to charter.
