The slow take-up of periodic training has prompted suggestions that drivers who fail to complete the necessary 35 hours will not be banned after the 2014 deadline. Godfrey Smith, training director of driver training company Advantage HGV, says: “I think the government will relent and allow them another year.” Jackson disagrees. “Transport minister Mike Penning has made it clear they will come down like a ton of bricks on anyone who does not have sufficient periodic training by 2014.” Based on current rates of Driver CPC take up, he believes the industry will face a 30% shortfall in qualified drivers once the 2014 deadline is reached.
