ST ALBANS-BASED operator Bill Chippington Haulage has received official recognition for its approach to training with a national award.

It received the NationalTraining Award, in recognition of the firm's commitment to training excellence, at a ceremony in Cambridge last week.

Chi ppi n gton developed the training programme over the past two years in order to reduce its staff turnover and improve profitability.

Board chairman Malcolm MacMillan says that before the new training system was put in place the firm was seeing staff turnover of around 50%. "It's all about giving drivers greater satisfaction from their jobs. Something's got to change to get more people driving," he adds.

The training has involved paying for drivers to upgrade their licences from C to C+E, extensive forklift training, and additional training for management.

The company hopes to add computer training for drivers.

"Part of the exercise was to show that it had boosted business. Turnover and profits are up and our customer satisfaction levels are up too — the most recent survey showed .100% satisfaction with our drivers." MacMillan adds.

The company runs 80 trucks from depots in St Albans, Corby, Milton Keynes and Wolverhampton.
