Grouping the oldies

BEING devoted by nature and persuasion to anything that saves me effort, I'm happy to see that the road and rail transport collections at the Science Museum in London have now been grouped in the new centre block. The new collection was officially opened on Tuesday.

Everything from racing cars to puffing billies is on show and there are some nice models of early steam road vehicles. They are calling this section the Land Transport Gallery.

Unlimited possibilities

THE Ladies' Festival of the Industrial Transport Association's London Division is really meant to be a fun-time to make up in some degree for all those lonely evenings which transport men's wives and sweethearts endure through the year. And very nice it is, too!

But they still don't get it all their own way. For example, at the Europa on Saturday the menfolk had managed to list eight toasts and the ladies only figured in two!

Two items of shop talk made a nice contrast. K. R. Dwyer said he was in some doubt about whether impending legislation would raise the status of road transport—there might not be any transport managers left to have their status raised.

More optimistic was ITA president Lord Wakefield. He felt that whatever effect legislation might have on future forms of transport, there was certain to be a constantly increasing volume of goods to be carried, whether on or under the surface, in the air —or in space.

Now there's a prospect; or has Barbara already got plans for an Astronautical Freight Corporation?

Breathe freely

TED SEARLE, Cubitt Town Transport, has long been renowned for his pioneering spirit. Back in 1933 he designed a system of petrol/ paraffin ignition, reported in CM on August 4, 1933. More recently, while others stood around, he embarked on a groupage system with Millwall Containers, the first I believe on the Isle of Dogs. Last Saturday, seven days after the introduction of the "breath bag" he displayed again his foresight and pioneering qualities.

In order to save his haulier friends any embarrassment through seeking to dispel the gloom of Barbara's new Bill with another spirit, he had them transported to the RHA East London dinner in a coach. If others follow Ted's example, coach operators will benefit from "the bag".
