Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DURING the period of the war, the most important model produced by Karrier Motors, Ltd„ Luton, for civilian usage has been the Bantam, which the company has continued to manufacture as a 2-ton load carrier, or, alternatively, as a short-wheelbase tractor for hauling 5-ton loads on detachable trailers of the superimposed type.

Municipalities, in particular, have used the Bantam low-load chassis to good purpose, primarily for refuse-collection. work, but this handy and mobile vehicle has also been used for a variety of other purposes, one of which is indicated in the accompanying illustration, Employed exclusively by Gateshead Corporation on a schools meals service, the van—supplied through Minories Garage, jesmond Road, Newcastle-onTyne—conveys food and equipment to and from communal kitchens and schools in the borough.

Built in the workshops of the cleansing and transport department of the County Borough of Gateshead, under the direction of the superintendent, Mr. W. C. S. Culley, M.I.P.M., the body, which is panelled in sheet steel and has a plywood lining, has a capacity of 290 cubic ft.

Some 1,200 cooked meals comprise a full load for transport from the communal kitchens to school canteens, and as a part of the van's work two loads, equal to 2,400 meals, are dealt with each day, from Monday to Friday, between 10.30 a.m, and noon.

The low-loading feature enables the containers in which the meals are carried to be handled with a minimum effort. A female driver operates the van and is assisted in loading by a handyman at the kitchens and in unloading by caretakers at the schools. The manoeuvrability of the machine is

such as to enable difficult approaches to be negotiated with ease and it i3 possible to deliver the cooked food direct to the canteen entrance.

Incidentally, Gateshead Corporation has, for many years, employed Karrier vehicles, and its present fleet comprises 28 Karrier refuse-collection and streetcleansing vehicles, together with seven tipping lorries of Commer manufacture.
