Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A T the Commercial Motor Show at il_Olympia next month Scammell Lorries, Ltd., Watford, will display an articulated eight-wheeler and a sixwheeler (the latter a frameless tanker), a four-wheeled chassis, a 5-7-ton trailer chassis, a Pioneer overseas-type rigid six-wheeler and an entirely new 12-ton rigid six-wheeled model, having a trailing axle.

This new model incorporates the standard ,Scammell 80 b.h.p. four-cylindered engine of 5-in, bore and 5i-in. stroke, with hardened-steel cylinder liners, alloy pistons, overhead valves, Simms magneto, Claudel-Hobson carburetter, etc. It has a pressed-steel

l324 frame 14 ins, deep, with bolted crossmembers. Orthodox semi-elliptic springs are fitted at the front, whilst reVersed semi-elliptics, oscillating upon a central trunnion, carry cambered rear axles of 41-in. diameter. On these the road wheels are mounted upon Timken roller bearings, and carry 13.5-in. by 20-im low-pressure pneumatic tyres. Tyres of the same size are fitted to the front wheels.

The transmission is by universally jointed propeller shaft and, spiral-bevel drive to a differential countershaft, and thence by Duplex chains to the forward axle of the rear bogie. The hand brake works in 20-in. drains on all four rear wheels; and the foot brake on a 16-in, ribbed drum fixed to the transmission shaft. The powerful transmission brake is a feature which the Scammell concern has long utilized.

, The overall length of the chassis is 30 ft., the wheelbase being 19 ft. and the track 6 ft. 1 in. These dimensions give a body space measuring 22 ft. by 7 ft. 6 ins. The chassis weighs approximately 5 tons 15 cwt. In tests this new model has given remarkably good results. The company wishes to emphasize that it is in no way intended to supersede the famous Seammell articulated six-wheeler, which has its sphere of usefulness.
