haulage very seriously. However, once a week our, quirky correspondent, the Hawk, steps off his perch to take a humorous look at the industry to keep us all sane. If you have any off-beat yarns that illustrate the stranger, or sillier, side of the business, he'd like to hear from you. As a softhearted old bird, he's also happy to publicise charitable works— and is always interested in events for the vintage vehicles he drove as a fledgling. On the road again

his old gal may look a bit rusty on the surface, but the roar of her engine proves she is not yet ready for that big breaker's yard in the sky. After spending 45 years in a barn, this American 1922 Stutz model K fire engine has crossed the Atlantic to join her new owner, garage proprietor Brian Brooks at his home in Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

Brian bought the engine at Christie's auction rooms. It was one of a collection of 49 vehicles dating front 1913, owned by the late Alexander Miller of Vermont US. Sometimes known as a 'baby Stutz' it has a four-cylinder in-line engine and a manual three-speed gearbox which also powers the 350gallon-per-m inute pump. This little engine still boasts many original features, including a pressure tank, hoses and ladders that were fitted when new.
