Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by David Craik • Drivers at Esso's transport base in Purfleet, Essex, will have to work the hours they will miss through staying at home on Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year.

The holidays this year fall on weekdays and the terminal at Purfleet will close both days.

Esso says the drivers have a set number of contracted shifts to work each year which must all be met. A spokeswoman says: "The drivers have options to make the time up that they will be spending at home with their families during Christmas. One option is to take two days from their holiday allowance."

One driver accuses Esso of acting like Scrooge—an accusation denied by Esso. "The shift hours must be worked," says the spokeswoman. "This is not new Esso policy and drivers at other depots will also be asked to make up hours if their terminals are closed as well."

• P&O Ferrymasters is uniting with Suffolk County Council to campaign against speeding. A special panel sticker showing the logo "Make The Commitment" will be displayed on the P&O Ferrymasters fleet of lorries. P&O general manager Cliff Mitchell says: 'We need to draw people's attention to the message not to speed, and to commit to it."
