Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THIS week's prizewinner is Mr. J. A. Stevens, of Heighington, Lincs. lie says that he has had considerable trouble with the underfloor-engined B.M.C. as when the engine revolutions reached a certain point there was much

screaming" from the engine. The cause of this was finally traced to the rubber hose from the air cleaner getting soft and losing its stability. This meant that when the air to the engine increased the rubber hose was unable to resist the pressure—the valls closed inand so the passage of air was considerably reduced. Hence the scream.

New hose was fitted, but in time this too went soft and the scream reappeared. Flexible exhaust pipe was then tried, but this also proved unsatisfactory.

Finally the flexible exhaust pipe was inserted inside the rubber hose, leaving about 2 in. of hose clear at each end to permit securing with jubilee dips. The result was a perfectly rigid pipe which was well able to withstand vibratory shocks. Mr. Stevens says that he understands this is a common fault with this type of vehicle, especially tippers, when some of the hydraulic oil may get on the pipe.

Comments Handyman: This is a good cure. When 1 had this trouble I stiffened the hose with a spiral of welding rod.
