Fixed Capacity Piston Pumps NOW available from Industrial Hydraulics Ltd. is the Bucher range of fixed-capacity piston pumps. These units, as small as the average car dynamo, are suitable for maximum intermittent pressures of up to 2,150 p.s.i. and maximum continuous pressures of 2,150 p.s.i. Maximum drive-speed is 3,000 r.p.m.

The range consists of five sizes and details of the models are as follows:—

By varying one end cover of the Bucher pump a variety of control mechanisms can be incorporated. Arrangements can be made for variable output, two-stage output, two-port outlet with differential output, integral relief, and non-return and directional valves.

The Bucher is an axial piston pump with swash plate drive. The pump casing, cover and mounting flange are of highdensity cast iron', giving smooth and hard-wearing bearing surfaces for the polished steel pistons. The pump takes its suction through transfer in the cylinders and discharges through conventional spring-loaded ball

valves. Lubrication is provided by internal drillings and normal circujation.

Nozzle for Thermospray Gun A NEW nozzle for applying sprayed coatings of hard-facing alloys and other metals is now available for the Metco Thermopsray Gun. It is claimed that spraying time is cut by half when this is used for depositing coatings of tungsten carbide on parts such as plug-gauges, self-sharpening cutting edges or parts blasted by an abrasive: Hard-facings of nickel-chrome alloys which are used on pump-shafts and plungers subjected to wear and corrosion. conveyor screws, arrester hooks, and so on can now be sprayed at the rate of 18 lb. per hour. This is equivalent to coating

38 sq. ft, with a hard-facing 0.010 in. thick in one hour. •

High deposit efficiency (90-95 per cent) is claimed for the Thermospray, important when this type of equipment is used for applying premium metals and for reducing production costs. Made by: Metco Ltd., Chobham. Woking, Surrey.

1 8 Auto-Dimmer and Dip-Dim Unit cHORTLY to be made available from Thorn Electrical

Industries Ltd. are two dimming devices designed to reduce dazzle at night. The Thorn Auto-Dimmer minimizes dazzle from stop lights and direction indicators by cutting the power supply to these lights to a maximum of about 16W, It operates only when side lights or headlights are turned on, full brightness being maintained during daylight.

The unit can be installed easily in the existing wiring of a vehicle at any convenient point, connection being by press-fit tags, solder, or a specially-designed socket. Two separate solenoid-operated units, incorporating a changeover switch and resistors, maintain the independent circuits to stop and flasher lights. A feature of the device is the " fail-safe " circuit which, in the event of component failure, reverts the lighting system to full brightness. The unit's component parts are housed in a moisture-sealed aluminium container, which is fitted with a fixing bracket. The Auto-Dimmer is to be available in 6, 12 and 24V versions.

The Thorn Dip-Dim device effectively dims a vehicle's headlights in the dip position. It operates when the ignition is switched on—so that parking lights can be used independently. The circuit is designed in such a way that when the normal headlamp switch is used the system is inoperative.

The Auto-Dimmer and the Dip-Dim unit will be supplied to plug into a common base—or fitted separately, as required. Made by: Thorn Electrical Industries Ltd., Special Products Division, 105-109 Judd Street, London, W.C.I.

Prices: Each unit to be sold for less than £1 10s.

Liquid-level Sight Plugs RECENTLY introduced into the U.K. .by Vatric Control Equipment Ltd. are liquid level sight plugs incorporating a built-in reflector. They are from the range of accessories designed in America by the Technical Development Co. of Pennsylvania.

Using this type of plug the presence of 'oil in gearboxes or the fluid level in other types of housing can be checked by quick visual inspection, without recourse to dipsticks or gauges.

The reflector shows clearly the fluid level even in dark conditions. A further advantage is its damping action when there is active agitation of the fluid within the gearboxas the liquid becomes trapped between the liquid and the transparent window and a median level is shown. A floating ball may be enclosed, if required.

The body of the plug is made from aluminium alloy or steel, depending on application and normally has a shatterproof plastic lens. In the industrial grade there are two thread ranges. each with four thread sizes: 1 in.-16 UNF to 21 in.-16 UN, and in. NPT to 1 in. NPT. Other thread sizes can be obtained to special order.

The sight plugs are also obtainable without the reflector in the same sizes for use as observation windows.
