QW1FT reaction took place in road transport circles following the inclusion in last t.-01 week's autumn Budget of an increase of 6d. a gallon in fuel tax, Within 24 hours prominent members of the Road Haulage Association throughout the country had been contacted and a decision reached to recommend an immediate increase of 2i per cent in road haulage rates. In addition to the fuel tax this increase takes into account new scales of wages.

, A further R.H.A. announcement was made this week by the hulk liquids group, whose rates sub-committee recommends an addition of id. per mile to contract hire and 21 per cent to spot hire rates.

A similar announcement comes from the National Conference of Road Transport Clearing Houses. It is advising all members to increase their rates for general haulage by 2+ per cent forthwith following the fuel tax and wage increases.

British Road Services Ltd., Pickfords Ltd. and B.R.S. (Meat Haulage) Ltd. announce that they will be raising charges to meet the increase in fuel tax, but no amount is specified. B.R.S.
