CM COVER STORY

christopher.wattonfarbi.co.uk STOBART GROUP chief executive Andrew Tinkler has called on the industry to work together and ensure the new government understands the impact high fuel duty is having on the industry.

Speaking to CM after the coalition government between the Conservative and Liberal Democrats was formed, Tinkler says it is up to the transport associations to make sure that the government focuses on the impact of fuel duty on the road transport sector.

the industry as a whole has got to get together and really try to help the new government to understand the duties on fuel," he said.

Tinkler countered suggestions that the Stobart brand could he used to open doors at a ministerial level: "1 do not see we are different to anyone else. If we can share this agenda with the government and the transport organisations, it will give them focus, hut it is important that we as an industry] are involved in these talks, and I do not think we [Stobart] are favoured."

At the same time the Road Haulage Association (RH A) has welcomed reports that secretary of state Philip Hammond (see below) could consult on the introduction of a fuel duty stabiliser.

RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning says:"We are encouraged that Hammond is said to he exploring 'pay-as-you-drive' charges for HGVs, thereby ensuring foreign hauliers will have to pay for the privilege of using I JK roads."
