SCANIA HAS shelved plans to introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered 4-Series trucks into the UK because of the reduction in the level of green truck grants available to operators.
Six months ago the manufacturer pulled all its converted natural gas 3-Series tractors off the road when CM revealed they were over-heating and prone to engine failure (CM 30 October 2003). It is now halting development of its 4-series trucks following the Energy Savings Trust's (EST) decision to cap grants. Scania (Great Britain) UK sales
director, Roger McCarthy, says the EST announcement caused prospective customers to review the feasibility of gas-powered operations.
"The feedback we have received indicates that operators have now decided against pursuing the gaspowered option.The development of a Scania 4-Series CNG-powered truck is no longer commercially viable," he says.
McCarthy adds that the decision will not affect existing users of Scania gas-powered products; the company will continue supporting their operations.
