Peter Housby and David Brown each admitted 11 counts of aiding and abetting chart falsification at Carlisle Crown Court. They were also fined £2,750 and ordered to pay up to £1,000 prosecution costs each.

Two years ago Bulman Bulk & Haulage was fined £9,500 after pleading guilty to 17 similar offences.

The court heard that most of the offences admitted to were committed while the first proceedings against the company were pending. About one in eight tachograph charts were found to be false.

Sentencing, the judge said that the tachograph regulations were designed to prevent drivers being exploited in a situation where they might fear losing their jobs, to prevent unfair competition and to protect pedestrians and other road users From over-tired drivers.
