Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Lane Group is using sulphur-free diesel from Sweden in nine Volvo FL10 distribution vehicles operating on contract for The Body Shop International from its Littlehampton depot.

The decontaminated diesel is produced by Greenergy DMF in Sweden where 75% of fuel sales are of environmental grades, encouraged by effective and environmental transport policy.

In 1990 the introduction of aerodynamic equipment on drawbar operations improved fuel consumption by 20-24%.

The vehicles need no modification to use Greenergy DMF which is claimed to be 98% free of sulphur and so reduces smoke and particulate emissions and almost eliminates sulphur dioxide—the cause of acid rain. Other advantages with this odorless fuel are less contamination of lube oil and reduced engine wear.

Others getting in on the clean fuel act include Boots, Sainsbury's and London Transport. But without tax incentives the UK producers say it is just too expensive to produce sulphur-free diesel although they are working towards producing a quality of fuel by 1996 that will be permit the use of catalytic exhausts.
