EXCLUSIVE • Seddon Atkinson will begin engineering a new premium tractor—codenamed
77—at the end of this year. It will be fitted with the same fullwidth LD cab as the recently launched Iveco EuroStar (CM 13 May). but with locally produced styling panels unique to the big-A marque. It is expected to break cover during the first quarter of 1994.
Unlike the Iveco EuroStar it will be sold with a proprietary engine, the Cummins 14-litre N-range, which includes the latest electmnically controlled 373kW (500hp) N500 Celect.
Seddon has released few details on its proposed new flagship other than it will be initially be sold alongside the current Strato heavy tractor which uses the some Cabtec cab as the Pegaso Troner and Daf 95 Series By early 1995 the Cabtec-based Strato will have been phased out in favour of the new model.
In keeping with Seddon's use of the Strato name, the new pre rnium tractor will be called the Stratocruiser. It will share a chassis frame with the T6 light/medium tractor, due to enter production in June, which also uses an Iveco cab: the MP cabin fitted to the Iveco EuroTech.
The first T6 models to come off the Oldham line will be 4x2 tractors with 8,10 or 14-litre Cummins engines; a 12-litre Perkins will be offered if there is sufficient operator demand. Twin-steer tractors will follow a month later, ahead of multi wheelers. By introducing the Tfi light/medium-duty tractor with the Iveco cab Seddon says it will be able to "educate the market" in preparation for the Stratocruiser. Once T7 is in place the entire Seddon Atkinson range will have Iveco Group cabs on top of proprietary drivelines.
o Seddon will show a new sixwheel municipal chassis with the EuroTech crew cab and a 179kW(240hp) Cummins C Series engine at the Institute of Waste Management show.
