THE West Midlands Fire Service has received the first of the new Hestair Dennis R133 fire appliances.

The vehicle, claimed to be one of the most sophisticated and powerful diesel driven fire vehicles of the water tender type in the world, is powered by the Perkins V8.640 engine unit developing 163kW (218bhp). This is coupled to the Allison MT 640 automatic transmission, giving a top speed of over 120km/h (75mph).

Full air brakes and power steering are standard fitments . along with the dual Godiva UMP pump which has a capacity of 2,373 titres (500gal) per minute.

A modular body gives spacious accommodation for crew equipment plus 1,818 litres (400gal) of water.

A further eight vehicles have been ordered.
