LORRY DRIVER OF THE YEAR

LIVERPOOL ROUND

N. armful of awards was the visible sign of a multiple success by J. C. Kendrick (Paraffin Distributing Co. Ltd.), BMC, at the Liverpool round of the Lorry Driver of the Year contest on Sunday. With a repeat overall win he carried off a souvenir of last year's best performance (not presented at the time), the trophy for this year's overall win, the cup for the best tanker

driver and a team tankard. Kendrick incurred 110 penalty points, against 132 by J. J. Kelly (Tate and Lyle Transport Ltd.), Foden, who was next in order of merit.

Everton's presence at the FA Cup Final on Saturday was not without its effect on the Liverpool event. The entry, which previously wap reaching up towards 190,

came down with a bump when a number of drivers asked to withdraw in favour of a trip to Wembley. But there were still 147 left, from most points of view quite a large eiough number to be handled during the day. All tests were duplicated, an arrangement that speeded things up so that the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Ald. David Cowley, was able to present the awards and still keep his appointment to lead the (football) victors into the city centre. As usual the Dunlop factory at Speke formed an excellent venue.

Although some of the drivers regarded the road route as more tricky than usual, a substantial minority preserved clean sheets on this section and a fair percentage came through the Highway Code test without loss of marks. Width judging took some heavy tolls and with good results in this respect Kendrick had a decided advantage to which had to be added a penalty of only 10 on the bay test. Kelly scored well on the route, with no marks lost, and on the kerb test where his penalty was only 10. E. Pinguey (Thomas Scott and Sons (Bakers) Ltd.), Ford, who repeated his 1965 win in Class B with a penalty of 161, took a new trophy put up for the best flour confectionery trade driver. A.T.
