THE Northern Licensing Authority

has authorized Durham District Services, Ltd., and Mr. J. K. Hunter, of Seaton Delaval, to increase their fares.

Durham District sought permission to add id. to ld.-51d. singles, Id. to singles of 6d5 and over, and to all returns Of 5d. and over, and to increase the price of 12-journey tickets by 10 per cent.

Granting Mr. Hunter's application, which was in respect of his services. between Seaton Delaval and North Shields and Seaton Dclaval and Cramlington, the chairman of the Authority, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, commented that if people in country areas could not support stage-service operators with private-hire work, they could expect only That the stage services would eventually be taken off.

2d. Minimunt for Merthyr?

Permission to charge fares on a mileage basis, with a 2d. minimum for 0.8 mile, is being sought by Merthyr Tydfil Corporation. They are also seeking to abolish concession rates for old-age pensioners.

Hardwick's Services, Ltd., are seeking the Yorkshire Licensing Authority's permission to bring their fares into line with increases recently granted to United Automobile Services, Ltd., and the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd.

The Northern Ireland Transport Tribunal have postponed, until their general review of all charges next year, the Ulster Transport Authority's latest application for an all-round increase in road and rail freight and passenger rates. The Tribunal are "very reluctant" to advance rates and fares again.

It had been put to the Tribunal that the Authority's deficiepcy in net revenue would be in the region of £544,000 in a full year, but this did not take into

account an estimated increase in earnings of £94,000 if the maximum charges approved last December were introduced.

The Tribunal thought the deficiency had probably been over-estimated. When U.T.A.'s accounts for 1954 were published, the matter would be sympathetically reviewed, the chairman said.
