A GENERAL speed limit of 30 m.p.h.

is to be imposed on restricted roads under the Northern Ireland Road Traffic Bill, which was introduced on Tuesday. Fire appliances, ambulances, police and Customs vehicles will be exempt.

Driving tests. are to be introduced, although drivers who have held licerfces will be exempt. Machinery will be set up for hearing complaints against the revocation or refusal of a licence, or against the manner in which a driving test has been conducted.

The Bill provides for increased penalties and disqualification for dangerous driving and for driving under the influence of drink. Anyone guilty of dangerons driving which has been the cause of another person's death or serious injury will be liable to up to, five years' imprisonment. Three or more speeding offences will make a driver liable to disqualification for a minimum of six months.

Anyone convicted of a driving offence may be required to pass a test before again being issued with a licence. A test will be compulsory after disqualification for more than 12 months.

A NEW SPOT WELDER

ANEW portable spot welder weighing 20 lb. and having a capacity up to 2 by 14-gauge mild steel, is to be distributed bst Philips Electrical, Ltd., Century House, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, W.C.2.

Known as the Selex, the equipment consists of an 11-in. by 6i-in. by 64-in. cabinet which can be connected up to any standard three-point 15-amp. socket.

The upper arm of the welder is brought into contact by a simple movement of the hand-grip lever and dynometric control prevents any weld being initiated until there is correct pressure between the electrodes.

The normal 1-in, opening of the electrodes and the 64-in, working length of the arms can be increased to 4 in. and 13/ in. respectively. The electrodes arc .air cooled.

LIGHTWEIGHT FLEXIBLE HOSE

THE flexible advisory service of the Compoflex Co., Ltd., 26 Grosvenor Gardens, London, S.W.1, has produced a new rough-bore hose, known as the Featherweight, which can be used for petrol, oil, pure benzole and other chemicals. Available in a range of bore sizes up to 4 in., the product is claimed to show an appreciable saving in

weight. The weight per foot ranges from 0.65 lb. for the Ifin, bore to 2.9 lb. for the 4-in, bore hose.

FUEL TAX ISSUE EVADED

DURING a Conservative Party election broadcast on television on Tuesday night, Mr. R. A. Butler refused to be drawn by Mr. W. Vaughan Reynolds, editor of the Birmingham Post, on the subject of the fuel tax.
