Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE attitude of the Road Haulage Association towards the General I Election is one of "wait and see." The Association are continuing their policy of complete denationalization within the terms of the 1953 Act and no alternative, in the event of the Socialists gaining power, has been considered.

It is understood that the question of a compromise, on the lines suggested by Mr. John Barber on pages 546-547, did not arise at last week's meeting of the R.H.A. national council.

The present policy, will obviously be inexpedient if Labour wins the Election. In that event, the chairman's committee are likely to meet quickly to consider a new policy and an emergency meeting of the national council would he called. The council are not due to meet again until the Association's annual conference takes place at Harrogate in October.

The council last week approved in principle a pension scheme ...for the employees of hauliers. The scheme, which has been prepared by insurance experts and a sub-committee of the R.H.A. (The Commercial Motor, April 8), was remitted to the executive committee to secure the views of the area committees on certain contentious details.

When those opinions have been collated, the matter will have to ‘o back to the national council, so that the scheme is unlikely to be put into effect before the end of the year.

No Meeting on Speed Limit The council approved the attitude adopted by the employers' representatives on the question of the speed limit for heavy goods vehicles. No further meeting of the National Joint Industrial Council to consider the matter has been arranged.

The following were elected to the executive committee:

Ex officio: James Barrie, R. G. Crowther, F. F. Fowler. R. N. Ingram and J. B. Mitchell. Area representatives: D. Carmichael (Scotland),. R. Clifford (Northern), W. Bridge (Yorkshire !Leeds% J. OCAL authorities in South Wales and the west of England were this week asked to underwrite a LIOm. scheme for building a road bridge across the River Severn. It is proposed that the money should be raised by loans and should be recovered by a 7s. 6d. toll on users of the bridge.
