Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NOTTINGHAM haulier with a an. fleet of 33 lorries who, six months ago, was warned about the condition of his vehicles, was on Monday granted a renewal of his licences without modification by the East Midland Licensing Authority.

Mr. A. G. Curtis, the Authority, was told that the operator, Mr. Joseph Chambers, Haydn Road, Nottingham, had spent £21,000 on new vehicles, had increased his maintenance staff and had personally taken over the maintenance department of the business.

Mr. P. Stokes, a vehicle examiner, said that when he inspected Mr. Chambers' vehicles in April, only one out of 33 was prohibited by him from use on the roads. He reported a big improvement irs workshop conditions. The Authority's senior vehicle examiner, Mr. C. Wilcox, said that at present the position was satisfactory.

Mr. Chambers gave an undertaking that if his licences were renewed, he would ensure that the position was not allowed to deteriorate again.

Granting a renewal of the licences, Mr. Curtis said he was satisfied that Mr. Chambers had taken steps to put his house in order. Having regard to the evidence, he did not propose to take further steps towards the suspension or revocation of the licences.

SEARCH FOR PARKING PLACES

FFORTS are being made by the La London and Home Counties Division of the Traders Road Transport Association to encourage co-operation among members in finding parking places for long-distance vehicles.

A member is compiling a directory of suitable parking places used by his drivers throughout the country. The information is to be placed at the disposal of the Association. Mr. R. E. G. Brown, divisional secretary, suggests that other members should compile similar lists.

The development of bi-lateral parking arrangements is also recommended by the Association.

B.R.S. HAVE SECOND THOUGHTS

BECAUSE Mr. K. V. Russell, of Brierley Hill, is a candidate in the General Election, British Road Services have withdrawn the permission granted to him to travel in one of their vehicles to investigate complaints about the working conditions of private-enterprise drivers.
