Details of the New 2f-ton. Model 50 Garford which has an Auxiliary Gearbox Giving in all Eight Speeds Forward and Four Reverse.

SEVERAL UNUSUAL features are contained in the latest product of the Gaeford Motor Truck Co., Lima, Ohio, U.S.A., who are represented in this country by Willys-Overland-Crossley, Ltd., Heaton Chapel, near Manchester. The Garford is not new to this country, as quite a numb-er has been operating successfully, particularly on rapid delivery work, • _when the vehicles are equipped with pneumatic tyres.

,. The employment of an 'auxiliary gearbox which gives intermediate ratios, as well as a higher ratio for high-speed work, is very useful where difficult country is encountered, and where, in a fleet, Certain vehicles may be fitted with solid tyres and others of the same type with pneumatics, as the extra ratios available enable. these ewith. pneumatic .tyres ta be min at the higher speeds which are permissible without overdriving the engine:

Commencing with the three-point-suspended power unit, this is a four-cvlinderedemonobloc,af 41-in bore and 51-in. strokewith a detachable head. . The crank' shalt is presided with three bearings, and the big ends are of the four-belt type. Lubricatilas is by pressure throughout-, the connecting rod bearings being fed from the main bearings through pas• sages drilled in the crankshaft, a sepal.; ate supply also being delivered to the timing, gears.

Ignition is attended to by a high-tension magneto with the advance and retard controlled by a lever on the steering column anda cut-out switch on the facia board.

The carburetter is a simple plain tube type ineunted at the right oftae engine, • Reverting to engine lubrication, we rosy mention that a pressure relief valve is used between the oil pump and the bearings, so that a uniform pressure of oil is maintained in all circumstances. A bayonet-by-pa oil-level indicator is used to indicate the quantity of oil in the sump, and there is a pressure indicator on the dashboard.

Connected direct to the inlet pipe between carburetter and manifold is a governor of the centrifugal type,' which as gear drivenfrom the eams'haft. The entire mechanism is effectually sealed to prevent tampering ,by unauthorized persons.

A centrifugal pump is employed for

circulating the cooling water through the jackets and the bailt-up radiator of the cast tank type, which is supported on rubber cushions, the-air circulation being assisted by a large four-bladed fan driven by a V belt.

The ordinary gearbox is of the fourspeed selective Sliding type, and is mounted in the centre of the chassis on two channel-steel cross-members. At the front end it is carried in a rocking bearing in order to give three-point suspension.

The auxiliary transmission forms a unit with the clutch housing, and, when used in conjunction with the gearbox proper, gives in all eight speeds forward and four in reverse, these including a epecialiy high gear.

A special feature of this auxiliary gearbox is that-, by its use, a power take-off, for driving a winch or other device, can be permitted two speeds in one direction and one in the other...This gearbox is connected to the main gearbox by a carder' shaft with laminated flexible couplings of -the fabric type, whilst the drive from the main gearbox to the rear axle is through a propeller shaft -with totally eneloeed Spicer-type joints, the final drive being through overhead worm gearing and full-floating axle shafts. All the gears and shafts, both in the main gearbox and that providing the additional ratios, are of nickel-steel, carefully heat-treated and ground, so that efficiency and silence in operation are ensured.

The use of an extra gearbox between the engine and gearbox proper is not unknown in this country, as such a device is utilized on certain four-wheeldriven machines -designed for high speed or railcar use, but to the best of our belief it has not yet been employed on ordinary chassis. Certain types frf supplementary gearbox are, however, marketed for use in connection with Ford vehicles.

The clutch is of the multiple dry disc type, a covered hand hole being provided for inspection or adjustment. Borth the hand and pedal-operated brakes operate on the rear-wheel drums.

The wheels themselvesare of the caststeel hollow-spoked type mounted on roller bearings, and in the standard chassis are equipped with 36-in. iby 4-in. solid tyres at the front and 36-in. by 8-in. solid tyres at the rear. The rearaxle housing consists of a steel pressing extending from wheel to -wheel, the spring seats being separate and no truss rods required. The springs are of the semi-elliptic type both at the front and rear. They are made from alloy steel, and on the rear springs is a patented three-point shackle which is used at the front end of each, This is claimed to provide a means of cushioning the rear axle from driving shocks and to prevent spring breakage, as -the driving and load-carrying stresses are distributed over several spring leaves. Other features of-this chassis include a 7-in. pressed-steal channel frame reinforced by cross-members and gusset plates, a cam typo steering gear with -a 20-in. steering -wheel, and a large cylindrical. petrol teak of 25-gallon-capacity 'located under the driver's seat.
