A DEPUTY TRAFFIC Commissioner has allowed weight restrictions to be removed from a company's 0-licence, even though he agreed with objectors that the operating centre's access road was unsuitable for trucks.

Deputy TC Christopher Heaps says that only the Highways Agency can decide whether a road is safe for a particular use, and so he could not refuse the application by Pinks Hill Stone Centre.

The Woking, Surrey-based company held a restricted licence for three LGVs not exceeding 12 tonnes, but it had applied for this condition to be removed. For Surrey County Council. Andrew Stokes said the road leading to the company's premises was of insufficient width to allow trucks to pass without running on to the grass verges. Local residents also complained about being "intimidated by LGV drivers".

Company manager Claire Brooks said the proposed vehicles were shorter than other company vehicles using the road.

Heaps inspected the site and concluded: "With a view to minimising any effect, I grant the application subject to a condition that the authorised vehicles shall not exceed 26 tonnes G VW or nine metres in length."
