Hauliers back campaign for A82 trunk road upgrade

by Roanna Avison HAULIERS, EMERGENCY services and local businesses have launched a campaign for an upgrade of the A82, which runs from Tarbet to Inverness.

The trunk road is famous for the landmarks it passes, which include Loch Ness, Ben Nevis and Glencoe, but it is also has a high number of accidents.

Between January 2005 and the end of 2007, there were 22 fatalities and more than 450 injuries on one stretch of the A82.

The campaigners' long-term goal is to persuade Transport Scotland to upgrade the entire stretch from Tarbet to Inverness, but the immediate target is to win funds to improve the four accident black spots along the route.

Alasdair Ferguson, managing director of Ferguson Transport (Spean Bridge), says his trucks use the A82 every day. "The road is narrow and tortuous and, in a number of areas, is in such a state that I have grave concerns for the safety of our drivers. Our vehicles experience more damage and wear and tear on this road than on any other. He adds that the A82 is 'a nightmare' for foreign drivers, who do not expect a trunk road to be so narrow that in places two vehicles cannot pass and where, if they stick inside the centre line, they run the risk of getting stuck in the soft verges or hitting a rock.

Transport Scotland is currently carrying out a review of the entire Scottish trunk road programme for 2012-2022 and the campaign Demand A82 Upgrade is pushing to ensure that A82 is included for improvement.
