Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE revision of long distance schedules and services by United Automobile Services Ltd., forecast in The Commercial Motor on February 7, came into operation on March 1. The company has introduced motorway operation between Newcastle and London on day and night services as an alternative to its Great North Road route via Newark. At the same time, a new departure stand has been brought into operation at Gallowgate Coach Station, Newcastle, permission having been obtained to use this station as a departure point for certain long-distance services — e.g., London, Scarborough and the summer operation to Lowestoft.

The inquiry and booking office on this site was completely modernized last year and work is now going ahead on the provision of other facilities for passengers. Although less than a quarter of the total Newcastle London journey is actually on Ml, the new service offers a saving of 55 min. The return day service leaves Victoria at 9.15 a.m., arriving at Newcastle at 7.27 p.m. Night motorway services also are run in both directions, while the 204 summer night service via Bishop Auckland and the motorway has now been extended beyond Newcastle to Ashington, Northumberland, in both directions.

Coincident with these and other changes, United has altered some en route refreshment stops to make use of new and improved catering services where possible.
