During the five weeks from December 16January 18, last, the Lonclon County Council issued 170,725 motor licences, which brought in over £2,958,000, as compared with 179,331 and approximately £2,923,000 respectively a year ago. Taking into account licences issued at post offices, the total revenue for London was nearly £3,102,400, against £2,950,000 last year. The number of new vehicles registered rose by more than 720 to 6,200.

The fall in council issues does not represent any real decline in the number of licences issued, It is due to the fact that, last year, an abnormal number of licences was dealt with by

the council on account of the alterations in taxation. The big increase in duty received is largely attributable to -the use of higher-taxed vehicles. London Transport alone paid £39,000 more than in the previous year.

Cubs for Newfoundland. a

The Crown Agents for the Colonies have placed an order for 16 Leyland Cub goods vehicles, which are to be operated in Newfoundland. Similar to the 10 Cubs shipped last May, the chassis are to be fitted with all-steel bodies and Woods end-tipping gear. The vehicles will he mainly employed on the construction of new roads-.

Lucas Methods Demonstrated.

Over 380 Lucas battery agents from all parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire met for a full-day conference at Harrogate, on Tuesday. Minute degrees of accuracy at every stage in the manufacture of ignition equipment were demonstrated by a film of the Lucas factories at Birmingham. NO STABILIZATION IN CUMBERLAND RATES.

In considering an application by Mr. R. Dover, of Keswick, for an additional vehicle, Sir John Maxwell, Northern Licensing Authority, commented on the varying rates for haulage paid by Cumberland County Council. He had had trouble in this matter with Durham County Council, and now he found that the rates paid by Cumberland County Council varied by as much as 13s. a day. He adjourned the application until April 9

Co-operation for the Empire Exhibition.

An important engineering company in the commercial-vehicle field making tipping gears, bodies, etc., wishes to get into touch with any concern proposing to take a part stand at the Empire Exhibition, Johannesburg, from September 15, 1936, to January 15, 1937. The company will be prepared to co-operate with two other manufacturers and share the cost on a mutual basis of non-competitive manufactures. Big Cuts in Road Expenditure.

• Expenditure on road works in the administrative area of West Riding County Council is to be ' reduced in order to keep down the rates. At the " budget " meeting of the county council, last week, the estimates of the highways committee, which had already been cut by £100,000, were further reduced by £66,127. The county rates were increased by 5d. in the pound, instead of by 8c1., as previously indicated.
