Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

i Driver Steve Bryant may have serve an extra year in a oroccan jail because a £19,000 ne has not been paid.

Bryant, originally from altham Gross, Reds, has laintained his innocence since aing arrested for drug smugin g in Tangiers in 1993.

He is due to complete the eximum sentence for the offence in March 2003, but another year will be added unless he pays the fine which was imposed at the same time as he was jailed.

Donna Cook, Bryant's friend and long-time campaigner for his release, says there is no way he can raise the cash.

Now Bryant has written to the Moroccan Ministry of Justice asking why his sentence is being extended when he has already served the maximum term.

Stephen Jakobi of Fair Trails Abroad, which has also sup

ported Bryant, says: 'Imprisonment in lieu of fines when there is no means to pay is forbidden in most countries.'' He adds that the British government has done nothing to help Bryant since he was arrested when cannabis was found hidden in a load of frozen squid he was delivering.
