• At the recent British Transport Advisory Committee annual conference, Interbrew UK logistics technical services manager Rick Sheehan revealed that Interbrew's fleet of 700 vehicles, BOO trailers, 220 fork-lifts and 600 company cars was previously generating a damages bill of £5m a year—equivalent to putting VI on every barrel of beer the company delivered.
The annual cost of pallet repairs alone was 11.2m while tyre damage (not repairs) cost Interbrew a further £220,000 a year. "The culture was like being in denial—where damage was concerned it was always somebody else's fault," said Sheehan. "Until we came out of denial we were never going to solve the problem. It's all about taking ownership."
