Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

You are reporting on inroads made by East European hauliers using cheap labour into transEuropean work previously done by UK firms (CM16-22 May).

Unlike the Socialist Truck Drivers, who have a campaigning strategy to protect European Union level wage rates, the employers who are being put out of business are doing absolutely nothing to fight this threat to our jobs.

Haulage operators who sit around waiting to become extinct when faced with cheap labour costs of rivals from Eastern Europe could be compared to Neanderthal man watching our Cro-Magnon ancestors eliminate them from history.

But this would be unfair on the Neanderthals as they had bigger brains than our ancestors, and 'big brains' is definitely not an epithet that can be applied to UK haulage owners and bosses!

The situation is actually worse than your report implies, as some UK haulage operators are now using cheap-labour Eastern European drivers and others are using cheap-labour contract firms to replace UK firms. STD is collecting the names of firms who do this and will have no hesitation in "naming and shaming" them.

Anyone interested in actually doing something to protect jobs, wages and conditions should contact STD on 0798 9851602 to discuss this and a number of other issues we are campaigning on. Raphael Webb, Socialist Truck Drivers.
