ACumbrian cheese producer risked the loss of a 60-tonne delivery because of faulty weighing equipment at Newhaven. Three lorry-loads of the Appleby Cheese Company's cheese were held in France after they were discovered to be 2% lighter than records showed. This was important because the North African buyer was claiming a European subsidy and would be unable to get the full amount on a short load.
Rescue was at hand in the unlikely form of Cumbrian Trading Standards. They persuaded Newhaven customs' officers to test equipment which weighed the loads before they crossed the Channel. It was discovered that the equipmentwas at fault and further tests at the French end confirmed the stated weights to be correct.
The cheese went safely on its way. Cheese toasties all round in North Africa!
